Cybersec 2009 notes

News

October is starting and hence we will have some changes in the timetable starting from next week. During the current week we will still use the September timetable.

The main change is that Kivimaa will start lecturing and Leis will have a pause in lectures (you should start doing your homework). The Freudenthal lecture time is also moved.

So, from next week there will be no Leis lectures at Cyber on Wednesday. Instead, the Freudenthal lectures will take place at Cyber on Wednesdays during 10.00-11.30 (and not on Thursdays, as before).

On Thursdays you will have two Kivimaa lectures at 14.00 and 16.00 in the room VI-125, where Freudenthal lectures used to be.

On Fridays you will have a Kivimaa lecture at 8.00 in VII-422 (if the room was not swapped?) where Leis used to have lectures. Also, since Tikk will be travelling a lot, she is making some changes in the schedule, basically having several lectures some Fridays and none on others: please get the details directly from Tikk!

Additionally, Leis has the following important advertisement to all the students of his course:

Students who have not yet obtained webct "user name -- password" for Foundations and Management of Cyber Security ITX8043 course can have these from Varje Vain in the room KI-xxx.

After Sept 23 there will be break in lectures till Oct 30 at 8:00 in lecture room X-315 . In the period from Sept 23rd till Oct 30 you have to do your homework. Tasks for homework you will get in the webct page of the Foundations and Management of Cyber Security ITX8043 course.

Observations and suggestions

Observe that the first semester is relatively easy. It makes a lot of sense to take additional elective courses at the first semester.

In particular, cybersec elective courses of cryptology at Tartu are a good choice for people interested in tech and math!

You are supposed to declare your courses for the first semester during the first half of september, using the OIS system. Contact the study administration people at IT-235 Raja 15, 12618 Tallinn, phone 6203528, email i@ttu.ee if you need help!

Right now it is not possible to declare the Freudenthal course. Do not despair: it will become available later and it is ok to start the study without declaring this course immediately.

First semester speciality lecturers

  • E. Tikk eneken.tikk@mil.ee
  • P. Leis Paul.Leis@seb.ee
  • J. Kivimaa jyri.kivimaa@mil.ee
  • M. Freudenthal margus@cyber.ee

Timetable

The following timetable does not cover additional, free elective courses: look up these yourselves as you declare the course.

The "Foundations and Management of Cyber Security" by Paul Leis and the "Information and Cyber Security Assurance in Organisations" by Jüri Kivimaa is taught in the following way:

  • in September Leis will give lectures twice a week (also Kivimaa time)
  • in October Kivimaa will give lectures twice a week (also Leis time)
  • in Nov-Dec they will have seminars and labs in parallel.

The Wednesday morning lectures 8-12 by Leis will take place only in September.

The Secure software design by Margus Freudenthal will be held on Thursday 14-16 in VI-125 during September, and on Wednesday 10-12 in Cyber 126 during October-December.

Monday

No common/obligatory lectures.

Suggestion: cryptology at Tartu.

Cryptology I and Cryptographic protocols

  • Crypto I lectures Mon 12-14 and Tue 12-14, exercise sessions Mon 14-16 and Wed 10-12. You're advised to visit at least the exercise sessions. The course takes place during the first half of the semester, last classes take place during the week of Oct. 19th to Oct. 25th.
  • Cryptographic protocols: same, but during the second half of the semester (first lecture at October 26th). The lectures and exercise sessions are not so well separated as they are in cryptology I. You're advised to attend all classes because of that.
