People who have not yet declared their courses: please visit the study administration at the IT building, get your printed forms, fill them with a course list and submit: Andrejs, Rosella, Dyan, Yash Pal.

Additional Elective Courses

You can take the following courses in Tartu and get these accepted as part of your curricula in the module of elective courses:

MJJV.10.033 Insurance of Property Risks (5 ECTS)

MJRI.10.035 Economic Environment (6 ECTS)

MTAT.03.206 Practical Training in Information Technology (12 ECTS)

MJJV.03.158 Organizational Behaviour (6 ECTS)

MTAT.03.245 Social Informatics (3 ECTS)

MTAT.03.248 Introduction to Internet Psychology (6 ECTS)

Observations and suggestions

Observe that the first semester is relatively easy. It makes a lot of sense to take additional elective courses at the first semester. See the ideas below and scan the OIS study portal for available courses this fall (takes effort, but it is useful to learn to find your way in OIS),

In particular, cybersec elective courses of cryptology at Tartu are a good choice for people interested in tech and math!

You are supposed to declare your courses for the first semester during the first half of september, using the OIS study portal. Contact the study administration people at IT-235 Raja 15, 12618 Tallinn, phone 6203528, email i@ttu.ee for necessary passwords and for any other kinds of technical administrative help!

If for some reason you cannot declare a course in time, do not despair: it is ok to start the study without declaring all courses immediately.

NB! It will take time - at least until 6 september - to get the OIS passwords for international students. Understandably you cannot declare your courses in OIS until that, meaning that is OK to declare them later.

Scholarship information

Two substantial scholarships will be awarded to first-year students based on the results of the first semester. Approximate decision time 1. February 2011. No applications required: cybersec students are automatically eligible. Decision will be based upon (a) weighted average of grades (b) having enough (ca 1/4 of total studies) points.

Ideas for additional courses during fall 2010

Initial suggestions for courses in addition to the main course schedule are different for people with/without IT background. In the first case, get intro courses (generic intro, very basic programming and very basic networking). In the second case, take additional non-intro courses or do some courses (or replacements) in advance.

People with no/little IT background

You need to get some general IT background, very basic programming competence and intro to networking:

  • General
    • take the course ITX0025 - Introduction to Information Technology (Endre Domiczi), lectures odd weeks Friday 08:00-09:30 room V-301, labs even weeks Friday 08:00-09:30 room IT-213D .
  • Programming: two options, start in parallel, then choose which (or both) to pursue:
    • Partially self-study option: start http://math.hws.edu/javanotes/ and enroll to the comprehensive programming course based on java (iti0011) programming course based on the book. The lectures are in Estonian (no point in attending unless you understand Estonian) but you can receive labwork in English and do the labs in English (choose a suitable labtime once per week from OIS and talk to lab instructors). In case you have no programming background, you'll simply have to do additional excercises from the book to get to the level required by the labs (doable). NB! For students speaking Estonian, just attend the iti0011 course as regular student, attend lectures etc (obviously, you'll still have to do additional excercises from the book).
    • VBA english course: given by Jaan Übi.
  • Networking
    • Wait for Peeter to come back with Tartu suggestions.
    • Contact Truls Ringkjob at it college and ask about possible netw intro courses this fall (might happen, if you find a suitable one, verify with T.Tammet that it is OK): Truls Ringkjob, Truls.Ringkjob AT itcollege.ee, phone 6 285 848

People with an IT background

  • Possible replacements for Tallinn spring business administration courses already this fall:
    • The course TIX8280 International Business (4.0 ECT) is taught in spring. However, you can replace it with the course TIX2730 - Management, taught this fall on Mondays weeks 1-8: 17:45-21:00 lecture+exercise , docent Stein Skjorshammer, room X-222.
    • The course TIX8300 Business Ethics (3.0 ECT) is taught in spring. However, you can replace it with the course TIX2720 - Intercultural Communication, taught this fall on Tuesdays even weeks 10-17: 17:45-21:00, lecturer Leon Miller, room X-221.
    • See the TVTM11 schedule link under the "T-School of Economics and Business Administration of TUT" block in the timetable in OIS.
    • You may contact the Economics and Business Administration international studies counselor Siyi Ma (phone 620 3940, room X-247) for additional details about the courses
  • Tartu: Cryptology I. Requires good math background. See course page and contact Peeter Laud (peeter_l@ut.ee) for questions about possible distance learning, replacing lab time on Thursdays etc.
  • See the IVSM schedule link under the "I-Faculty of Information Technology" block in the timetable in OIS: these are courses for the first-year international master studies in software engineering and could be an interesting option. The software engineering program coordinator is Jüri Vain (vain@ioc.ee, phone 620 4190): you may want to check with him for the available/suitable courses in that program.
  • The IT College (building located close to the IT dept building) offers very good CISCO academy network administration courses. Contact the IT College for the exact schedule and availability. Some of these courses are a suitable replacement for networking/administration courses at the second semester in Tartu. However, the IT College/CISCO courses are not part of the Uni of Tech curriculum, hence you would have to pay for these courses yourself.
  • Some of the second-year cybersec courses might be suitable if you have enough IT background and there is no time overlap with you main courses. Check the schedule http://www.lambda.ee/index.php/Cyber_security_2010_second_year and in case of interest, talk (email) to the lecturers and ask about the required background and possibility to enroll.
