=== Cisco Academy networking courses ===
Cybersecurity students have a possibility to attend one of the following courses on Spring semester and we hope to have the same possibility available in the following semesters also:

* ITV8060 Computer Network Security (4 EAP)
=== IT Academy Scholarships ===
** Starts from the beginning of April. The proposed time for lecture is on Wednesdays at 8.15 and lab on Friday at 14. Please let us know if you plan to take the course, but it collides with other courses in Tartu.
There are special [http://www.arengufond.ee/foresight/ita IT-Academy] scholarships available for Cybersecurity students starting from this semester. The scholarships are awarded based on rank in admission and the study results in the previous semesters. The main condition is that you have 30 EAP/semester in total and the rank is based on your average grade. The [http://www.ttu.ee/infotehnoloogia-teaduskond/infotehnoloogia-teaduskond-1/it-tudengile/teated-uliopilastele/ annoncement and statute of the scholarship] is available on the faculty web site (in Estonian only). You don't have to apply for the scholarship. You will be announce when you will get it. You should consider the scholarship conditions in planning your studies this semester.
** It is basically a CCNA Security course for Cybersecurity program
** It is suitable for students with some networking background and command-line experience
* ITV8040 Network Technology I (6 EAP)
** Lecures on Tuesday 14.00 in X-406 at TUT (TTÜ).
** Labs on Friday 12.00 ITC Cisco lab room 415.
** It is basically a CCNA Semester 1+2 course for Cybersecurity program
** It is suitable for students with no background in networking

It will be counted as an optional course in the Specialization module. It will be a free choice course initially, but moved to Specialization module after you get a grade.

Declaration of the courses is opened. OIS may give a warning that you have to pay for the course. You can ignore this. The payment order is cancelled for one course for everybody in the IVCM program.

The courses are given by Truls Tuxen Ringkjob. Labs will take place in Cisco lab at ITC.

== Observations and suggestions ==

Observe that the first semester is <i>relatively</i> easy. It makes a lot of sense to take additional elective courses at the first semester. See the ideas below and scan the [http://ois.ttu.ee/pls/portal/ois2.ois_public.main OIS study portal] for available courses this fall (takes effort, but it is useful to learn to find your way in OIS). You can find all the courses given in English (timetables of all international programs) in TUT by looking at OIS -> Timetables -> click to GB flag in the center of the page.

In particular, cybersec elective courses of cryptology at Tartu are a good choice for people interested in tech and math!

You are supposed to declare your courses for the first semester during the first half of september, using the [http://ois.ttu.ee/pls/portal/ois2.ois_public.main OIS study portal].
Contact the study administration people at IT-235 Raja 15, 12618 Tallinn, phone 6203528, email i@ttu.ee for necessary passwords
and for any other kinds of technical administrative help!

If for some reason you cannot declare a course in time, do not despair:
== Ideas for additional courses during fall ==
it is ok to start the study without declaring all courses immediately.

<b>NB!</b> It will take time to get the OIS passwords for international students. Understandably you cannot declare your courses in OIS until that, meaning that is OK to declare them later.

== Ideas for additional courses during fall 2011 ==
The following suggested courses can be counted as optional courses in the Specialization module of your curricula. They will appear as free choice course initially, but can be moved to Specialization module after you get a grade.

Initial suggestions for courses in addition to the main course schedule are different for people with/without IT background. In the first case, get intro courses (generic intro, very basic programming and very basic networking). In the second case, take additional non-intro courses or do some courses (or replacements) in advance.

=== Independent of background ===
* ITV8040 Network Technology I (6 EAP) (strongly recommended)
** Lecures on Monday 12.00 (from week 2).
** Labs on Monday 14.30/16.00 IT College Cisco lab room 415.

** Lectures in Estonian, but it is possible to have it as a self-study course and get all the needed resources from the professor
** Good prerequisite for the cryptography courses in semester 2 in Tartu

=== People with no/little IT background ===

You need to get some general IT background, very basic programming competence and intro to networking. Please tell the program coordinators about your background and we will put some suggestions about elective courses on this page.

** Partially self-study option: start http://math.hws.edu/javanotes/ and enroll to the comprehensive [http://www.lambda.ee/index.php/ITI0011 programming course based on java (ITI0011)] programming course based on the book. The lectures are in Estonian (no point in attending unless you understand Estonian) but you can receive labwork in English and do the labs in English (choose a suitable labtime once per week from OIS and talk to lab instructors). In case you have no programming background, you'll simply have to do additional excercises from the book to get to the level required by the labs (doable). NB! For students speaking Estonian, just attend the [http://www.lambda.ee/index.php/ITI0011 iti0011 course] as regular student, attend lectures etc (obviously, you'll still have to do additional excercises from the book).

* Possible replacements for Tallinn spring business administration courses:

** See the TVTM11 schedule link under the "T-School of Economics and Business Administration of TUT" block in the timetable in OIS. It has turned out that some of the courses belonging to this program can be studied only for additional fee (OIS will warn you when it is the case).
=== Sources for free choice courses ===
** You may contact the Economics and Business Administration international studies counselor Siyi Ma (phone 620 3940, room X-247) for additional details about the courses

* Tartu: Cryptology I. Requires good math background. See [http://vvv.cs.ut.ee/~peeter_l/teaching/kryptoi10s/ course page] and contact Peeter Laud (peeter_l@ut.ee) for questions about possible distance learning, replacing lab time on Thursdays etc.
You can look for additional free choice courses from the following sources

* See the IVSM schedule link under the "I-Faculty of Information Technology" block in the timetable in OIS: these are courses for the first-year international master studies in software engineering and could be an interesting option. The software engineering program coordinator is Jüri Vain (vain@ioc.ee, phone 620 4190): you may want to check with him for the available/suitable courses in that program.
Scan the [http://ois.ttu.ee/pls/portal/ois2.ois_public.main OIS study portal] for available courses this fall (takes effort, but it is useful to learn to find your way in OIS). You can find all the courses given in English (timetables of all international programs) in TUT by looking at OIS -> Timetables -> click to GB flag in the center of the page.

* The [http://itcollege.ee/?url=overview IT College] (building located close to the IT dept building) offers very good CISCO academy network administration courses. Contact the [http://itcollege.ee/?url=overview IT College] for the exact schedule and availability. Some of these courses are a suitable replacement for networking/administration courses at the second semester in Tartu. However, the IT College/CISCO courses are not part of the Uni of Tech curriculum, hence you would have to pay for these courses yourself.
You can take some other language course (French, German, Russian, Finnish) offered by the [http://www.ttu.ee/faculty-of-social-sciences/language-centre-2/ Language Centre] in addition to the courses (HLI2200, HLX8040) in your curricula. The [http://www.ttu.ee/public/s/sotsiaalteaduskond/Instituudid/keeltekeskus/English-based_courses_2012-2013_autumn_semester.pdf list of the English-based courses].

* Some of the second-year cybersec courses might be suitable if you have enough IT background and there is no time overlap with you main courses. Check the schedule http://www.lambda.ee/index.php/Cyber_security_2010_second_year and in case of interest, talk (email) to the lecturers and ask about the required background and possibility to enroll. The classes are quite popular and it may happen that there are no places left for the first year students.
=== ITX8511 Practical Training in Information Technology ===
